Karbon is the result of an innovative process and business progress. It is the achievement of a productive and creative challenge; challenging ourselves to prove that we can reach new goals, work with new materials.
Karbon is the result of years of research, work and intense collaboration between Actiu and the designer from ITEMDesignworks, Javier Cuñado. Its ingenious design, which has been awarded a Red Dot Award 2019, generates unexpected angles and silhouettes.
The Karbon manufacturing process takes 45 work days to create each chair. All the pieces have a hollow interior, hence it is extremely light but also resistant and warm to the touch.
Technology and Vanguard
Carbon fibre is the hallmark of Karbon, a material that is traditionally associated with elite sports and the aerospace industry, that has removed the creative limitations from these chairs.
Karbon blends timeless design, and seductive lines, with outstanding ergonomics which stands out for the quality, lightness, and functionality it offers. A product that reinterprets space to become its greatest champion. It is also a technical piece which combines cutting-edge technological processes with artisan know-how: each chair takes 45 days of labour to create.
This is the flagship product of Actiu’s ‘Actiu Unlimited’ brand, a project pushing the boundaries of vanguard design, which was recently unveiled at NeoCon in Chicago Accordingly, the raison d'être of Actiu Unlimited is the creation of iconic and distinctive pieces that help transform spaces and use technology and design to inspire people.
“Karbon is a challenge that has forced us to rethink our concept of innovation to think more of the long-term by introducing new processes and materials. This is just the beginning of a new creative method at Actiu, the products of which will bear the name of Actiu Unlimited”, explains Vince Berbegal, International Executive Business Manager
“We wanted to surprise the user with technological innovation and new processes and materials. In this regard, carbon fibre, which is traditionally associated with elite sports and the aerospace industry, has allowed us to create freer and more creative shapes than other raw materials, such as plastic or metal. We had to unlearn everything we knew about conventional processes and their limitations in order to be freer and take advantage of all the possibilities of carbon fibre”, states designer Javier Cuñado.
The pieces are hollow, which lowers the weight of the chair to just 3 kilos. Yet, the qualities of carbon fibre also make it highly resistant.
“We wanted to create a tide of surprises in the user’s first interaction with the chair. Firstly, its sophisticated and unique aesthetic as it shines just like the metal. Secondly, its feel which, although it may not look like it, is extremely warm and sensuous. Thirdly, its lightness. And, fourthly, the strength and comfort you feel when you sit on it”, adds Cuñado.
Karbon’s unique, stylish, and ingenious design allows it to create angles and silhouettes on a 3D weave that captures light and creates a unique visual effect on a supremely polished surface that invites the user to consider new forms of interaction and experiences between chair and user.
These features are exactly what makes Karbon the perfect example of the coming together of precision and a forward-looking approach. A must-have piece for all those who love creativity and uniqueness. More than enough reasons to make it a deserving winner of one of the most exclusive and prestigious product design awards in the world.
